AVTANDIL SHENGELIA Georgian Artist, Merited Artist of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Knight of the Order of Honor of Georgia Born on the 27th of September 1955 in the City of Sukhumi, Abkhazian AR. From 1964 to 1968 - studying at Sukhumi School of Fine Arts (Nikoloz Tabukashvili’s class). From 1971 to 1977 - studying at Alexandr Shervashidze Sukhumi College of Fine Arts, Faculty of Painting. Diploma project: Districts of the Old City. Master – A. Katljarov. In 1977 - studying at Gertsen Leningrad (now St-Petersburg, Russia) Pedagogical Institute of Fine Arts, Faculty of graphics. Diploma project: Series of etchings. Master: A. Kaneev. From 1983 to 1985 - studying at the Faculty of painting of the postgraduate school at Repin Leningrad Academy of Fine Arts. Diploma project: painting “Spring” (Master: V. Moiseenko). Since 1977 - participation at exhibitions. Since 1989 - Member of the Association of Georgian Artists. Restoration of the wallpaintings of the Kiril-Belozerskyi Monastery in Russia – 1985. Original frescos in the Tskhum-Abkhazian Cathedral Church (Georgia). A. Shengelia’s works are kept at the Sukhumi Gallery of Fine Arts, as well as in private collections in Georgia, Germany, France, Holland, U.S.A., Sweden, Turkey, Switzerland, Russia, Italy, England. Shengelia is the Director of the Alexandr Shervashidze Art College in Sukhumi. Since 1993 he works as Professor of drawing and painting at Tbilisi Academy of Fine Arts.
